rev_grml4ds : linux l4d&l4d2 servers live dvdroms

Postby sixcentgeorge » Thu Jul 01, 2010 5:27 pm

GrmL4D and GrmL4D2 are two live-linux dvdrom having size of 2,5 and 3 Go . they permit to start a linux server for

L4Ds by simply typing :
cd l4d or left4dead2
./srcds_run
that starts a lan server with default map . both have metamod and source mod installed and running .

it is possible to select option copy in ram at boot with both GrmL4D and GrmL4D2 . it requires 4 Go of ram , if you let it boot then server needs only 256 Mo or more

i posted files for players , there is one for the config settings that are matching those of servers

player_cfg_4_grml4d.7z :

the others are the campaigns i added to the servers .

for left4dead it is grml4d_addons_vpk_l4d_up1.7z

6 campaigns
deadcity.vpk
dthbrd7.vpk
silenthill.vpk
suicideblitz.vpk
viennacalling_1_1.vpk
city17 v2.5.vpk

for left4dead2 it is grml4d2_addons_vpk_l4d2_up1.7z

it is all campaigns adapted from L4D and
city17l4d2
deadcity2
death_aboard_ii_v1
detourahead_6
l4d2_diescraper_b11_8
Welcome to Hell

the servers and players files are in this folder for GrmL4D :

http://www.megaupload.com/?f=0BBEVYFH

in this one for GrmL4D2 :

http://www.megaupload.com/?f=2A8KON7J

to browse and edit the files , there is mc : Midnight Commander . you can launch it like mc --edit=server.cfg if you do not like the linked editor vi

i added a bootable iso : GRML_no_L4D.iso in the folders , it can be used to launch the server from a cdrom if a

hard-drive is having the folders conf and live from the GrmL4Ds iso .
it can be usefull as the hard-drive or usb-stick is faster than dvdrom .

big thanks to all from here or old forums that made it possible ;']

i made an updated iso for l4d2 that loads in ram without problems , files are GRML2_upd1 .
i removed nearly 1 Go of wav files : 650 Mo wav from left4dead2_dlc1 and 211 Mo of wav from the vpks of campaigns plus the windows dlls .
so there is no longer any problem with computers having 4Go of ram of more . happy 4 th of july l4d2 ;']

Doesn't this take a terrible amount of RAM? Also, what distro did you build those on?

i made an updated iso for l4d2 : files are GRML2_up2 .
to answer you ChrisTX : i use GRML small in the 64 bit release
the website is : http://grml.org/ and some info about the version i use : http://grml.org/changelogs/README-grml64-small-2010.04/
basically it uses 4 Go of ram . about 2,5 to load the file and servers have the rest : 1.5 Go that seems largely enough . the windows dedicated server uses 250 Mo per server , usually linux one's takes less ; it should be possible to have three or four servers using screen .
i did not tested using the fork system valve made but it should be very impressive compared to classical servers using hard-drives .
i will make the files so servers will start versus and others gameplay modes in a future release , may be some have the configs already ?

luckily it seems i found a perfect computer to be server : a hp touchpro , it has a i5 [ dual core with ht = four cpu ] and 4 Go of ram . it has a system that the screen can be connected using HDMI . so i will use it as the third screen of my ati hd5k and as my server .
i will show some photos when i will have reorganized my desk to install it , actually it is near my bed , being used as a htpc ;']

The Windows dedicated server is horrible! And yes, for some reason it takes up a lot of RAM. ( but that's not it's only flaw, ie. you can't run it as service and so on )

However, I am not sure whether a life DVD is the best mean of distrobution. Since a hard install should be by far faster, it might be a better way to distribute an automated install package for some lightweight distro. ArchLinux for instance for AUR ( http://aur.archlinux.org/ ) where you could put in a bash script which in turn would allow unattended installation. I imagine that to be easier and takeup less RAM.

But of course, this is up to you. Great idea anyways.

if you had took time too read you would have seen that server can be started with 2 folders on a hard-disk formated fat 32 or ntfs . i provided a 23 Mo iso for that .........
if you do not use the copy in ram option then server can run with a 256 - 512 Mo ram pc

by the way in all case my server is the faster on earth whenever you copy in ram or not , it is also the most easy to set up and use
